this has been lingering on my mind for some time now.

labh pe aati hai dua ban kay tamanna meri

written origionally by "M. iqbal" in Urdu

(urdu version)

Labh pe aati hai dua ban kay tamanna meri
Labh pe aati hai dua ban kay tamanna meri
zindagi sham ki surat ho khuda ya meri
zindagi sham ki surat ho khuda ya meri
Labh pe aati hai dua ban kay tamanna meri

Neik jo rah ho us reh pe chalana mujhko
mere Allah, burai se bachana mujhko
Neik jo rah ho us reh pe chalana mujhko

(English Translation)

My longing comes to my lips as supplication of mine
O God! May like the candle be the life of mine!

May the world's darkness disappear through the life of mine!
May every place light up with the sparkling light of mine!

May my homeland through me attain elegance
As the garden through flowers attains elegance

May my life like that of the moth be, O Lord!
May I love the lamp of knowledge, O Lord!

May supportive of the poor my life's way be
May loving the old, the suffering my way be

O God! Protect me from the evil ways
Show me the path leading to the good ways

This poem has been lingering on my mind and lips for quite some days now, every time i recite the first two lines, it reminds me of my school days.
The innocent time , the beautiful time , and the time where we used to recite it in our morning prayer session.

At that time we just used to recite it in the prayer session, the questions I may ask today to myself are:
- did I knew what it meant at that time ?
- did i knew the context of this poem?

I doubt...

but what intreagues me now, when i recall all those days , I remember every time i had to write an ESSAY in my Hindi exam, it has to be on India. whatever maybe the topic is ....be it...

Mera desh
mera bharat mahan

mere sapno ka bharat
ya fir aur kuch bhi ...

I had to write only on that ver topic....
not for the reason that I never prepared on an other topic, but for the simple reason that i knew so many quotations on India, or Indian Independence, with their Author's name aswell... and all the teachers love OUOTATIONS in the ESSAY, and if it comes with who wrote it...even better.

u can say that it was an easy way to impress the teachers and get good marks. LOL (yea i was smart enough to figure that out :-P )

Now the BIG ? is.... whats the relation between Mo. Iqbal, those hindi essays, and Quotations ?????????????????

Thats what intreagues me till this date ..

I would write a minimum of 20-25 quotations in my essays and many of those quotations on India were written by Mr Mo. Iqbal who was one of the visionaries on Pakistan. And to till date I dint knew that the above poem, which i recited atleast one morning per week for so many years, was written by him.

Hats off to Mr. Mo. Iqbal for such a sweet poem that can guide any person irrespective to his/her ethenic/religious origion/background.

Amit bhai,

Don't forget the golden rule of creating the quotations urself runtime during exam and then preceding it with that mandatory line "ek mahan kavi/mahapurush etc etc ne kaha hai"
